Cross Stitch 101: Floss Drops

Updated: Jul 13

What are Floss Drops?

Floss drops are small, flat cards designed to help cross stitchers organize their embroidery thread. Each floss drop has one hole at the top so you can hang it on a ring, plus a second hole that's used to loop a full skein of floss.

When embroidery floss is stored on a floss drop, cross stitchers usually label each one with with the thread's color number or name - and sometimes the corresponding symbol from their pattern. The floss drops are then clipped onto a floss ring so the colors stay neatly organized and accessible during each stitching session.

Floss drops come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and materials- including paper, plastic, acrylic, and wood - so cross stichers can choose the option that best suits their style and stitching needs.

Floss drops are especially helpful for keeping embroidery thread neat, organized, and easy to access during any cross stitch project. They make it simple to manage your threads, helping you spend less time untangling and more time stitching. Many cross stitchers use floss drops to keep all the threads for a specific project together in one tidy project bag. Others use them to organize their entire floss collection - hanging them by color, number, or brand - so everything stays visible, labeled, and ready to go.

Organizing embroidery thread might not be the flashiest part of cross stitch, but it's one of the most essential. Floss is often one of the most expensive parts of a project, and keeping it neat helps protect that investment. If you've ever spent time untangling threads or felt frustrated when cardboard floss drops start to bend or fall apart mid-project, plastic floss drops might be the upgrade you didn't know you needed.

  • Plastic does not bend and tear the same way paper does. Some cross stitch projects can take months or years to complete, with lots of in-and-out of project bags. Plastic floss drops will go the distance with you.

  • Reusable for multiple projects - No single-use waste.

  • Thinner than acrylic floss drops.

  • Flexible labeling options - You can write on them with permanent marker or use removable floss labels to keep them clean for each new project.
